Automata with One-way Jumping Mode (Algebraic system, Logic, Language and Related Areas in Computer Sciences II)

    Get PDF
Recently, new types of non-sequential machine models have been introduced and studied, such as jumping automata and one-way jumping automata. We study the abilities and limitations of automata with these two jumping modes of tape heads with respect to how they affect the class of accepted languages. We give several methods to determine whether a language is accepted by a machine with jumping mode. We also consider relationships among the classes of languages defined by the new machines and their classical counterparts

An Experiment with Ant Colony Optimization for Edge Detection in Images (Algebras, logics, languages and related areas)

    Get PDF
Ant colony optimization (ACO) is a simulation of the natural behavior of ant species; where ants find the shortest path between its nest and food source. Image edge detection is a basic image processing task, where the outlines of the objects in an image are identified, and then extracted. We present the results of an experiment conducted with the ACO algorithm applied to the edge detection problem

Supramolecular Complexation of \u3cem\u3eN\u3c/em\u3e-Alkyl- and \u3cem\u3eN\u3c/em\u3e,\u3cem\u3eN\u3c/em\u3e′-Dialkylpiperazines with Cucurbit[6]uril in Aqueous Solution and in the Solid State

Water seeds: Complex stoichiometry/composition and degree of oligomerization (oligomeric supramolecular complex formation) of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) with N-alkyl- and N,N′-dialkylpiperazine were investigated in aqueous solutions by means of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), ESI-MS, NMR and light scattering measurements. Complex stoichiometry/composition and degree of oligomerization (oligomeric supramolecular complex formation) of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) with N-alkyl- and N,N′-dialkylpiperazine were investigated in aqueous solutions by means of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), ESI-MS, NMR and light scattering measurements. It was found that the complex stability and the degree of oligomerization increase with elongating the alkyl chain attached to the piperazine core. X-ray crystallographic studies revealed a clear correlation between the structure of CB[6]–alkylpiperazine crystals obtained from aqueous solutions and the molecular weight/properties of host–guest oligomers existed in the solution as supramolecular “seeds” of crystal formation

Association analysis of toll-like receptor 4 polymorphisms in Japanese primary biliary cirrhosis

    Get PDF
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is characterized by portal inflammation and immune-mediated destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts that often result in liver failure. Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 recognizes lipopolysaccharides of Gram-negative bacteria. Infectious agents have been suspected to play a crucial role in PBC pathogenesis since TLR4 expression was found in bile duct epithelial cells and periportal hepatocytes in liver tissues of PBC. To assess the potential contribution of TLR4 SNPs to the development of this disease, we genotyped five SNPs in TLR4 in 261 PBC patients and 359 controls using a TaqMan assay. No significant positive associations with either PBC susceptibility or progression were uncovered. These results indicate that TLR4 polymorphisms do not play a prominent role in the development of PBC in Japanese patients. (C) 2012 American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Protocol for a multicentre, prospective observational study of elective neck dissection for clinically node-negative oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (END-TC study)

    Get PDF
Introduction: In early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), elective neck dissection (END) is recommended when occult lymph node metastasis is suspected; however, there is no unanimous consensus on the risks and benefits of END in such cases. The management of clinically node-negative (cN0) OTSCC remains controversial. This study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the efficacy of END and its impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with cN0 OTSCC. Methods and analysis: This is a prospective, multicentre, nonrandomised observational study. The choice of whether to perform END at the same time as resection of the primary tumour is based on institutional policy and patient preference. The primary endpoint of this study is 3-year overall survival. The secondary endpoint are 3-year disease-specific survival, 3-year relapse-free survival and the impact on patient QoL. Propensity score-matching analysis will be performed to reduce selection bias. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Clinical Research Review Board of the Nagasaki University. The protocol of this study was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry. The datasets generated during the current study will be available from the corresponding author on reasonable request. The results will be disseminated internationally, through scientific and professional conferences and in peer-reviewed medical journals

The objective of this study was to clarify the relationship between physical symptoms and self-care ability of postgastrectomy patients. Fifty-seven post-gastrectomy patients attending the outpatient clinic of the Department of General Surgery at the A University Hospital underwent an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey regarding postoperative physical symptoms and self-care abilities. The number of valid responses was 51. In postoperative physical symptoms, frequency of diarrhea disorder and activity disorder were high. In self-care ability, “ability to pay attention to health” and “ability to regulate physical condition” were high. In order to alleviate the physical symptoms that patients have after gastric cancer surgery, it may be necessary to provide self-care support so that patients themselves can find a health management method that suits their lifestyle, and continue to implement it. To that end, based on the patient's background, the symptoms predicted after surgery should be explained to them from an early stage. It is necessary to provide continuous self-care support for a long period from pre-admission outpatient to after discharge
